From 2015-2016 I was contracted by the Baltimore Kawasaki Sister City Committee to design a large scale public sculpture for Light City Baltimore- The nation's first large scale international light festival. I collaborated with a team of local metal fabricators and electronics specialists to realize the sculpture.
Take To-Ro: Bridge of Lights is a sculptural piece that uses fresh bamboo, softly lit inside with flickering LED lighting, to evoke the traditional bamboo lanterns used in Japan during the festival periods. The use of lanterns during the Obon season is to light the way for deceased ancestors to return to their homes and revisit with members of the family lineage who have come together to celebrate. This sculpture takes the traditions of Japan and recreates them in a contemporary fashion.
